In May 2005, Natalee Holloway disappeared from a high school trip to Aruba. Five years to the day later, 21-year-old Stephany Flores Ramirez was reported missing in Lima, Peru. Implicated in both crimes was one young man: a Dutchman named Joran van der Sloot.
Portrait of a Monster is the first book to offer a probing look at two of the most sensational cases of the decade and one of the most reviled accused criminals in the world. With unprecedented access to investigative files from law enforcement in the U.S., Aruba, Chile and Peru, New York Times bestselling authors Lisa Pulitzer and Cole Thompson offer an unflinching glimpse into the workings of an international manhunt and a chilling portrait of the alleged killer within.

Thought the comparison of the Natalee Holloway and Stephany Flores cases was very illuminating and cleverly done. An absorbing book.

This true story is both hard to believe and hard to put down. I would recommend this book to readers who like the mystery of a true criminal. The details of the information are meticulous--although there is a date discrepance in one section that was fairly glaring. The story covers the 2005 Natalie Holloway case and then the 2010 Stephany Flores murder so when that error occurs it is easy to determine that the wrong year was quoted.
