In novels such as All the Names, The Cave and Blindness, Nobel Prize-winning author José Saramago displayed unparalleled imagination, vision and clarity in exploring the way life on Earth is lived.
But what about the way death on Earth is lived?
In Death with Interruptions, Saramago addresses one of humanity’s biggest questions, the mystery of death, and answers it...by stopping it altogether.
It’s New Year’s Day, and by the stroke of midnight it’s clear that something miraculous is happening: Nobody on Earth has died. As the days go by, the politicians and priests panic while the people celebrate and dance in the streets.
But eternal life isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Those with fatal illnesses are stuck dying with them forever. Life insurance policies aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on. Funeral homes shift their client base from people to pets.
Meanwhile, in a lonely apartment, death (lowercase “d,” thank you) sits and observes the result of her experiment, her scythe and filing cabinets collecting dust. Now she has some big questions to answer: What will happen if death never kills again? And if she becomes human and falls in love, will death finally have a life worth living?

Although this was a difficult read...and it was...the concept is brilliant. I think we need to chastize the translator, not the author.
Would it be good if "death" did take a holiday? Think of the consequences!

I pride myself in finishing every book I start. After reading three chapters of this one, however, I broke my own rule. There is little punctuation, a bizarre incomprehensible plot, and is not interesting at all. Skip this book and save yourself the time that I'll not be able to get back.

This book reads like one ginormous run on sentence. Punctuation is our friend, it's there for a reason - I'm curious why this book does not make use of it? The reviews sound promising, but the book just does not deliver.

I found this extremely difficult to read...and I read constantly. I looked forward to this from review but just couldn't wade through the very long sentences. For me, it just didn't flow.
