From Hillary Jordan, the author of Mudbound, comes a thought-provoking fable about a woman sentenced to have her skin genetically altered to be bright red as punishment for having an abortion.
Reminiscent of both The Scarlet Letter and The Handmaid’s Tale, When She Woke is set in America in the not-too-distant future, where criminals have their skins genetically altered in a strangely cruel and unusual form of punishment. Hannah’s sin is the killing of her unborn child, and because she’s determined to protect the identity of the father, she is sentenced to live as a Red for 16 years. Now, stigmatized and shunned, she must make her way in a hostile world where faith, love and sexuality are governed by politics. A riveting book.

I expected kind of a whiny feminist rant. What I got was a thought provoking page-turner. The central character is neither whiny nor a feminist. But her literal and figurative awakening and her empowerment make for a fast paced and enjoyable read. I was pleasantly surprised, albeit a little disappointed with the ending.

I would have liked more detail about the government and why it changed, but it was a fast, interesting read. Don't get it if you're offended by the abortion debate.
